The way I see it, Hes talking about an ex girlfriend from before he got bit and famous. She told him he wasn't going to get anywhere, and they should just start planning on their future (hence picket fence). Hw didn't want to, so she broke up with him for someone else who would. Later, she sees him in papers on TV and relizes, she made a mistake.
