I don't think Alice was really a lesbian... I think that the only place she was ever accepted or felt any sort of love was when she was with her female clients (a simple cause of Mummy-doesn't-love-me blues), because as stated in the song, "she couldn't get it on with the boys on the scene," so it HAD to be girls, even if she didn't really feel any sexual attraction to them herself. I mean, consider the line, "It's like acting in a movie when you've got the wrong part." She was living this lesbian life because that's the only place she could find love, but it wasn't really who she was and it was killing her inside. I agree it was a suicide, because she just couldn't stand living a life where the only love she had was sexual and unrequited.
