shara worden's slightly whimsical explanation for this song: "i took the idea for this song from a book by george macdonald called at the back of the north wind. in this story (i do my own version of it, you know how it is) but in this story there's a little boy named diamond who was named after his father's big black carriage horse named big diamond, and little diamond sleeps in the hayloft just above big diamond's stall in the barn. one night, the north wind comes to little diamond's window, and she blows open his shutters and says, 'hey, would you like to come along with me and go on a ride while your parents are sleeping?' and he's like 'yeah! sure! that'd be really fun! i'd like to go!' so he climbs into the back of her long flowing hair and they fly all around the world doing the job of north wind. which, for those of you who don't know what that is, the north wind lightly brushes the leaves on the bushes, and sometimes! when she's in a great big fury, she blows open the stained glass windows of the churches, and other times she gives sailors on the ocean a very rough ride."
