The line, "God is Love, and Love is Evolution's very best day." has bothered me ever since it first hit my ears because I never thought that Bono would be one of those creationist people that truly believes that God is all there is...that science and evolution is false. He is so open-minded and I would absolutely lose admiration for him if that were the case...(no offense anyone, we all can have our opinions..)
I am definitely on Team Evolution, but I think that it all started from somewhere...even somewhere supernatural..science itself can be supernatural sometimes.
So I am going to say that the line, "God is Love, and Love is Evolution's very best day." may be Bono's way of saying his subscribes to both theories...as I've explained, that there is such a thing as evolution, though it was started by God (the name of which still bothers me, because I am Pagan and don't believe that the Christian God is all there is) but I'm open-minded enough to think that this "God" could also be a generic term for any higher power. God for Bono...The All, the Universe, etc. for everyone else non-Christian.
My friend, this line must bother you because it goes against every grain of your philosophy. BTW, the last time I checked - evolution was still a "theory" which its believers accept in FAITH. I will really wish for an evolutionist to explain to me what "love" means...in their philosophy, dont be too surprised by your findings...

Second - there is a difference between opnions and facts...learn to seperate the two, and finally, being open minded does not mean one must be "mindless". Intelligence can be exercised in a resonable manner.

Don't know if you guys till check up on this at all, but I wanted to say something to a few of you that it seems you have been too stubborn to realize.

Bono does believe in some sort of higher-power in fact he has several times called himself a Christian, and despite his "unorthodox" behavior, he is a very spiritual person. However, U2Kitteh, I wouldn't lose admiration for Bono just yet unless you refuse to believe that evolution and a creator cannot coexist. I think quite clearly Bono is affirming both realities here when he says, "God is Love and Love is Evolution's very best day". Some of his lyrics have been very interesting to read, I don't know if you know very much about the Christian religion, but Bono's lyrics are covered in jewels from the Bible and Christian theology, as well as some other faiths.
You also said something that seemed ironic to me. "I never thought that Bono would be one of those creationist people that truly believes that God is all there is...that science and evolution is false. He is so open-minded and I would absolutely lose admiration for him if that were the case.."
Again, I don't think Bono denies science and its wonderful progress. Regardless, how can you say you admire someone for being open-minded and respect what they are about, but then when you discover they may be slightly more spiritual than you had hoped, you abandon them? I mean honestly, I understand what you have against religion and spirituality because it brings about a lot of bad things, but sometimes people miss what spirituality has done for people, whether its real or unreal. Bono has lead a lot of organizations for good and he has called on organized religion to stop their fuss. He also believes there is a higher good for this to be accredited to. He sings about this concept of "grace" more than any other attribute. Interesting.
As for evolution. I am all on board with what science has to offer. Do I think it has its flaws? Of course, we'd be fools not to accept that. But nonetheless, science IS self-perfecting despite the fact it never will be perfect. IT constantly finds new things about this universe that opens our eyes wider and wider. Evolution, thus far, has not disproved my theologian outlook on life thus far for me. Thus, I accept both and live both rationally and faithfully. Maybe one day you can experience that. I know it doesn't make sense.
RICHARD. You make creationists look retarded. Stop talking. Scientific theories are not just the common man's "theory", they are extremely researched and tested hypothesis over years and years of collecting data. TO put this into perspective for you: You would say that you have a "theory" of what this song is about, you'd say "thats my theory". However, in the scientific world you would be shot in the face for saying that. To say something like that is a sin of science basically. You don't even have a hypothesis in all reality. All of our interpretation is speculation. Not to discredit anyone's analysis, because literary analysis is far from the realm of science...But Richard, what really is a "theory" in your world according to science's standards would be something like: Your car has been having problems. YOu run tests, you check oil, you open the hood check all the stuff test out all the parts to see which one is wrong and then finally you come up with a theory that it is your radiator that is busted. That is something that is probably built off of prior knowledge mixed with testing differenct parts and listening and feelings etc. Your theory has a solid chance of being right. However, and this is where your world gets to mingle with the science world :). What you may not know is that your car no only has a radiator problem, but some of the hoses running to the engine are completely shredded. It seems that through looking at only one possible theory, you have ignored another issue to be dealt with. And thus I propose, God and evolution some how in a complex system can coexist.
beau09... Macro-Evolution is simply the concept of micro-evolution over billions of years. A simple adaptation can happen in a few generations, that would be micro evolution. To change species would be macro, it would likely take a buttload of adaptations and mutations and luck and all this jazz. Macro-evolution is not ridiculous if you think Micro-evolution is factual. Just would need a few billion years.
Hi Orrin! Yes, I do check up these every once in awhile; I like to see if there is further conversation. Thank you for your very thoughtful reply.

I think I was just having a really rough time with that line at the time that I originally posted. Notice it is very close to when the album was released and I hadn't had time to listen to it over and over to really let it sink in. - This whole last album (No Line On The Horizon) has such a strange feel for me. The more I listen to it, the more I like it...and I'm enjoying it very much for that. I'm still a little uncomfortable with it which makes me sad because I LOVE U2, but it's growing on me.
I cringe that I posted about this at all because I am usually not one to ever talk about spiritual things to other people. I don't think I can express my thoughts through words as intelligently as I'd like and it makes me nervous that someone will misinterpret me. (A little of which I think went on here, but it's okay.)
The line just blew me away and I couldn't quite wrap my head around it at first - not the meaning of it, which as you explain is powerful...LOVE is the most useful and beautiful thing to come out of religion AND science, --- but that it was coming from Bono, whom I am ashamed to have somewhat misinterpreted and doubted after being a fan for so very long and whom I respect more than ever now that I finally get what he's trying to say with this song.
You are right...too much talk of Jesus and the Bible starts to make me cringe a bit. It's just a personal problem of mine and something I need to get over before I go around talking about people not being open-minded.
When I first started listening to U2 I would have probably considered myself Christian but since then my spiritual views have changed radically and now I would rather not be tagged with any faith label, though I call myself non-Christian or pagan because it's easier to explain. - I never deeply studied the Bible, but I do catch the references in U2's music and try to look them up when I don't understand. There are usually beautiful, thoughtful messages to find. There is in all religions.
I think we may have more in common with our beliefs than we realize. =c) I do believe that science and religion can coexist, and quite beautifully and wonderously. I am a big fan of Albert Einstein's spiritual thoughts about this.

Perhaps he means that love is the best thing to come from evolution? That's how I always took it.

Actually richard, there are two types of evolution. Micro-evolution, which is now scientific fact.

Macro-evolution is the one that is theory, and honestly, it's a ridiculous one and there's no way it can ever be proven to exist.
