This song sounds like its written about a sexual relationship (possibly a one night stand) with undertones of stronger feelings that have yet to be addressed. She's saying she is comfortable with the situation because she knew after they made love she has him, "bitten raw with pride".... "Too often had to hold me by your side", she understands that he's being promiscuous, runs away often and nobody is ever comfortable opening up with such high risks on their heart.
If they dealt with it right away it would ruin it since he obviously isn't ready. In the song he tells that he is not mature enough to handle the love he feels and is probably afraid of messing it up with her. He's giving her as much as he can but she feels insecure about loosing him since they haven't clarified exactly what they are and are still engaging in the act of making love. Which is defiantly a rock and a hard place.....
One day he's going to be able to love her but right now he's still a boy. Women mature faster than men :P
Yet that is just my initial interpretation from hearing this song and being in a similar situation.
