It's sort of a tribute to those who serve, both as him wanting to "stand beside the ones who stood alone", but also wanting our troops out of harms way "How long will we have to sing until you finally bring our sons our daughters home?", referencing the numerous Anti-War songs that have been out there (knowing his influences I would have to say R.E.M. is among the ones he's hinting to).
