I always interpreted this song thusly:
The first part is fairly obvious, chick got hurt and he's trying to pick up the pieces and waiting for the day. It's all pretty and romantic and he's a very nice boy for being so patient.
But at the same time, it'd be awfully frustrating having this girl moping about the last guy she was with.
So in the second part, the first guy has come and taken back the girl, and our narrator hasn't put up much of a fight, because girlie's still in love with the first dude and if she hasn't realised that the second one is the far better guy by now then she's not worth it.
I take it it's a case of a girl choosing the bad boy over the nice guy, but the narrator's damned if he's gonna sacrifice his dignity trying to keep her, and she didn't think that he'd give up so easily because he is in love with her, but he's gotta keep his self-respect.
I think there is something sinister in the end. Why does she think he would sit around and watch her go? She obviously tried to go back to the old boyfriend. Something happened, and he stopped it. I don't know if he killed anyone, but he did something.
