I loved this song when I first heard it, but it's developed a more personal meaning for me recently. My grandmother just passed away from Alzheimer's, and I can see the lyrics fitting that. Such as "But the night came in to stay/While you made up plans" like the night is Alzheimer's. "Building lifetimes, thinking you'd be here"--thinking she'd be here mentally for these last agonizing ten years. "When there's nothing left to say/I hear that life moves on" --life kept barreling on, even though we couldn't communicate to her once it got bad. And now, there's nothing for us to say, since we knew it was going to happen and it is ultimately better for her not to be in pain in anymore, and we must move on.
