Parts of the song (namely the chorus) made me think it was about slavery, but I don't think that's so... (After all, Tahiti from what I can tell never really had much slavery, all the Europeans just went there to holiday and spread their diseases. But I'm sure it's not that literal anyway.)
I feel it's sort of being sent off on this anticipatory journey, sort of like being chosen to lead the way and travel to a new place, only to have hopes crushed. That sort of fits with some of the other songs?
