To me this makes more sense as a song about death, cause i thought the "haven't been the worst" wouldn't make sense if they were breaking up. but now it makes sense and it sounds like he is rethinking his behaviour and how careless he was not appreciating the time they had together so he wants the person not to die so he has a second chance.
