It's about how our culture is so materialistic, and we have our priorities so mixed up, valuing the material before living creatures. She sings how we must try and find our calling and find meaning in our lives despite the obvious materialism and other factors working against that goal.

My Interpretation

I interpret the song as being about families with low education who have to work a lot and don't have time for their kids and their education. I see it as a call to children born in those circumstances to find and develop their talents, even if they haven't been brought up to be educated and don't have family around. Darkness=Benighted/ignorance and having no one there to help

"For those who work so hard Never see their children grow Into the gifts they give them" - Parents that have to work 2 and 3 jobs to keep food on...

When they talk about the never-ending love, I think of the love of learning; it's what we're actually hungry for this whole time, and it's the key to reach grand, realistic dreams.
