I think most of the aforementioned interpretations--of being someone's positive thing, or "silver lining" and then living for oneself, or becoming gold--are pretty accurate. It reminds me a lot of a previous relationship of mine. I was his silver lining, his consolation prize, but that was pretty much it. I didn't get to be my own person. But when I left him, I became my own person: gold.
