This song is a simple admission of what the subject did to his wife. Despite her sweeping him off his feet and giving her heart to him-along. He left betrayed that by, among other things, leaving her out to sea.

He speaks of his demons- in this song, his demons show up in the form of adultery and lust- as he has cheated on his wife with another woman.

Another meaning would be a somewhat religious meaning. Obviously, we're explicitly talking about demons- which have their place in the religious argument. When he writes "I put you on a tree" this could be a metaphor for the crucifixion of Jesus.
