The first verse is about getting used to people seeing through her smile. More than likely it's about being dragged out by friends to meet new people and stay active, stop moping. She's gotten used to this and also probably used to seeing it register on the person she's just met's face that something is making her unhappy.
She's going to try to keep up the happy facade, but when she's distracted for one moment and lets her mind wander, she goes straight back to remembering the one she's lost.
Now this may be a literal loss of a loved one or a loss in terms of a serious relationship. I'm inclined to believe it's the latter. Come on guys; it's Julia Nunes. She writes sad songs about boys breaking up with her.
The chorus seems to me like not being able to sleep because she's alone in the bed. I know all too well how much that sucks and how difficult that is. She doesn't want to wake up alone and it doesn't feel right.
Based on the second verse, she'd rather just stay sleep deprived than deal with the whole sleeping alone deal. She also doesn't want him to haunt her dreams.
Again, she's trying to put on a happy face but finds it impossible to pretend nothing's wrong.
"I thought I was fine, but it looks as if I might,
Not make it through the night."
This part leads me to believe she finally tried to sleep but she knows she can't do it.
