Totally Acurate Interpretation, crazyforfive!!!

The whole line "Heaven Fell On Herself Tonight" could mean Heaven (U.S.) fell on herself, as in, the twin towers, part of the U.S. fell on the ground (another part of the U.S.), the only metaphor being the Heaven part, and the rest acompletely literal translation... and even the "Heaven Fell From The Sky Tonight" being basically the same, all the debris falling from the sky, the explosions, etc.

The "Here we go, someone's knocking at my window/here we go I didn't ask for this shit" line could be interpretated as, America coming together, which it did immediately after the attack, but the narrator wants the necessary time to grieve and think about what happened.

I interpreted this song as being about 9/11 too. The title makes it pretty clear along with the reference to fire trucks and "which way did they go" refers to the disbelief that almost nobody missing from the attacks initially would ever be found alive. If you were old enough at the time, there was widespread blood donation across the US and a great deal of hospitals in the NY area were monitored for incoming casualties only to discover that almost everyone in the vicinity during the collapse were obliterated.
