i don't necessarily thing "brave" is meant to be sarcastic. the "brave son" is brave. he would venture out wherever he feels he's needed to take care of what he needs to. but the critique of the modern world and society that he lives (we live) in isn't a place where bravery is necessary. if anything, it's a place the brave son would rather deny.
to venture into this world wouldn't be brave. it's almost as though it would be giving up.
