I could be totally wrong, but I take it as him struggling through the motions of the day-to-day scenarios of a Mon-Fri lifestyle (work, etc..) He longs for his children, but can't be with them all the time, for whatever reason. However, just the thought of seeing them at the weekend inspires him and lifts his spirits until he is able to see them Friday nights through the weekend.
