No comments? This is one of my favorite Eurythmics songs and it's certainly one of their more under-rated ones. Lennox's eerie repetition of the song's title throughout, Stewart's unforgettable guitar, and the slightly spooky, seemingly ethereal fade out to the song's end combine to form a great piece of 1980s pop. While this album (titled the same as this song) was not the group's strongest, this piece, along with "You Have Placed a Chill in My Heart", "Shame", and "I Need a Man" create some of the groups best later work.

My Opinion

Absolutely agree with you tad482. The song seems to me about the exploitation of women by men and the vulnerability caused by this.

She said..Everything is fiction ...all cynic to the bone.

Those three lines are so simple, yet convey so much. I think Annie Lennox is a very under-rated lyricist and Dave Stewart a great song writer.

Agreed - it's brilliant. I agree with Cool4Cats on it being about exploitation - especially exploitation that comes in the guise of "something good for you", like protection or civilization.

The image I always got from it was of a British woman living in a British colony (at some point in history). Her people are supposedly bringing better civilization and better religion and better ways of living to the local "savages", but in reality it's the colonials who are the savages.
