To me, this song seems to be about a bit more than just the circle of life. Galileo was one of the most prominent figures in history to make the first move in convincing others that the earth, in fact, revolves around the sun. This song goes right along with that. "I thought the world. Turns out the world thought me." To me, that says that the "narrator" was convinced of an earth-centric universe. Instead, as it turns out, we're not even remotely the center. Not only are we not the center of our star system, we're a speck on a speck on a speck in terms of the vastness of the universe.
So, this song, to me, is about the realization that, hey, the world doesn't revolve around me. Man is not permanent, nor are we as important as many religions would have us believe. We are but one group of the privileged few to attain the status of the top of the food chain on this minuscule earth.
Is that depressing? Maybe. Until you consider the fact that the fact that we are here is a testament to the fortune that life is. Life is obscenely improbable at best. We're getting a shot at it now. So, while we aren't the be all and end all of this universe, we do have the opportunity to be here, at least for a while. So, enjoy it while it lasts.
Maybe I've read too much into this song, but that's what it means to me...
