I aswell think its about drinking away the pain.he knows he has no control over the situation,but his drinking he CAN control...and maybe that's a peace of mind to him (ya know the only thing he has control over at this point in his life)
and when he says, "well, it’s hiding on the other side of the world somewhere
making someone’s day so much brighter well, for you, you are wherever the sunlight is" I think he's saying the light/sun is no longer in his life because the girl is gone.and maybe she's somewhere out in the world makind some other guy just as happy as she made the singer.and his life is dark because she's no longer around
