For some reason it reminds me of the movie The Royal Tenenbaums and how Richie Tenenbaum is in love with his adopted sister Margaux and when she rejects it at first he attemps suicide (which is honestly one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen in an movie) I love Wes Anderson. but anyways ..
I don't really know what the song is exactly about, but it seems kind of obvious that a man is starving for the affection of his sister. I'm not sure about the whole rebirth part of the song, but it sounds really wonderful.
This song is simply about brotherly love in general. Everyone is either your brother or sister on this earth and you should treat them as your own flesh and blood. It's quite religious, in fact, as you can tell from the capitalization of "Father" and "His."

To paraphrase: When I am weary, don't treat me like a stranger; God wouldn't like it and may punish you. Do I not deserve to be treated with compassion, according to God's will? We are all born and we all die and are saved. We only have so much time...

To be clear, I am not religious, but I do like the message of the song and think Andrew Bird's version is beautiful. BTW, I love the Royal Tenenbaums. One of my favorite movies of all time and definitely Wes Anderson's best work.
I love this song so much.

Correction: it appears the word "his" is not capitalized, but it clearly refers to "Father" and therefore to God.
