As with all Shearwater songs meanings are crptic, to me it seems like someone remebering the warnings given to them by someone in their past - the sparrow lines, I feel like they're the voice or the advisor. But the character singing the song, they were too much of a free spirit, or too close-minded to listen, and the tone of the song suggests perhaps they are now regretful of this?
