Nevermind the great lyrics, this song has one of the greatest vocal deliveries of any song ever. Better than American Pie or even Vincent in my opinion, (though they have better lyrics and instrumentals). But the piercing intensity of Don's voice in this song is just remarkable. He's one of the most underappreciated geniuses, and I'm somebody that likes the Big Guys like Bob Dylan and David Bowie, so I'm not just saying that all the popular or critically-acclaimed musicians suck and that only the lesser-knowns are worth listening to-- but Don McLean is. Most just know him for American Pie. Just check out how many have commented on that song as opposed to all the others. But seriously, after Dylan, Don McLean might be the most poetic lyricist and expressive vocalist to come out of 20th century folk-rock music.
