I was reading the lyrics with a friend, and, we came up with an interesting interpretation of the lyrics, even though I slightly doubt it was the original intent... Do not take it too religiously, we simply thought it up because it reminded us of the story of Lucifer as we have been told it, we are not trying to print a religious undertone to this song.
Our interpretation consists of the lyrics telling the story of how Lucifer became the devil (or whatever you want to call it);
[ Tried of dull ages, I walk the same ground,
collecting the tragedies still
Hollow ambitions in a hollow mind
carried my cross to the hill ]
In here you find out that the narrator character (in our case, lucifer) is 'tired of dull ages', and 'walking the same ground', which we interpret for repeating the same actions always, not enough to his taste. He has ambitions greater then what he can attain currently, and the last line could be a ref. to martyrism, or to completing an arduous task by duty.
[ And how I lust for the dance and the fire
deep of the nectarine sunset to drink
spill me the wind and its fire
to steal of the colours - I´m the moonshield ]
Obviously, this indicates a will to possess or experience something (lust, etc). All the images used here are warm and full of life, dance, fire, nectar, sunset and wind. They could represent life itself, a greater status in it, the one whom God occupies and that Lucifer wants. The last line (although that is far fetched) could be about stealing the 'colors', colors representing life once again (whereas a gray image is dead, colour elightens and gives it life), and the possession of it.
[ Shattered hope became my guide
and grief and pain my friends
a brother pact in blood-ink penned
declared my silent end ]
After a failure to get what he wanted, he becomes a fallen angel (silent end), with a 'pact' done with 'grief and pain' (his own desperation).
[ Naked and dying under worlds of silent stone
reaching for the moonshield that once upon us shone ]
Naked and dying, could be a metaphor for naked, powerless, and dying, losing hope etc. Reaching for the moonshield, where moonshield would be the sun, that represents life, so, reaching for the life that once shone upon him.
In that interpretation though, 'I am the moonshield' does not make any sense.

Anyways, just a few thoughts. That is it.
