In my opinion, this song is about someone who had a broken relationship with the love of his/her life.
Being stuck in the middle of wanting to live alone because their love is always ruined by the bickering,
and wishing to be there for him/her again because this someone is still in love.

live alone is my favorite song from "tonight". i don't quite get the new york city taxi driver part. i know it's stupid but the first thing i thought was oh c'mon man, losing the love of your life doesn't mean you have to turn gay.. but, if he's alright he's alright i guess, lol.

The taxi part is apparently (according to an NME interview) about how whenever Bob's in New York he calls everyone "man" to make himself sound more American. It doesn't seem to have much to do with the rest of the song.
