This song is beautiful, it actually drove me (excuse the pun) to write a short story about it.
But now to my interpretation of this song: it's about this guy taking his girlfriends sister on a road trip of sorts. Along the way, they see plenty of things and he realizes that he actually has feelings for her as opposed to his girlfriend. Thus the line "trading in my blanket for a pillow". I think that line means, he is no longer just laying down, being kept warm by this blanket (the sister), but is now going to sleep (the pillow) for a while. This is such a pretty song that paints a picture in my head. Amazing amazingness. Kinsella always inspires me.
