I think "never seen but always sought after" makes more sense. i think he's struggling with the idea of God; if he does exist, he is a ghastly protector, laughing in my face. Everyone is crying out to him to save them from this waste. I don't know where the waves of rye fit in though. I am not schooled in agriculture.
