when i first read it i thought like. hes saying that in the moment you cant really always be too sure what your life is about or how you will end up down the line.

to me that means that what your goals and strengths are in life can sometimes turn out to leave you with nothing. maybe for example being the pretty popular girl in school with no brains. so your center stage, so to speak, "never meant a thing" and it left you with no profit, it was just thin as glass and became obsolete in the long run.
to me hes saying that life is never definite, you never feel all around good or bad, but strange and unprepared for whats next. life is full of surprises and we'll never know.
by the way it says " 'cause i never see it coming or you leaving". which again, unexpected twists and turns, nothing is ever written in stone.
