Because it seems to be about a long-distance relationship conducted largely through the typed word, I always heard the line as "An 'x' is the best I can do'; IE, he'll never kiss her for real, and can only type the letter to represent the action. Then again, I don't have access to the lyrics that came with the album, but pretending is nice.
I checked the album cover and it does say "an x" instead of "an ex". But its hard to determine that from just hearing it I guess. Also, maybe they left it ambigious so that it would have a dual meaning? Like they do not think there is any hope left at all for their relationship.
