I think this song is about religion and consumerism.

I think it is about religion because religion often is the "cure" which seems to multiply. He calls religion the cure because makes people "happy", but it is the disease because it makes people blind. It makes people sit and just pray as their problems pile up.

The consumerism point is noticeable when he says things like "These amenities are nice" clearly talking about all the little things people can buy to comfort themselves. He says "Fill your pockets while you can - And try to keep the upper hand" because I think he is sad that consumerism is turning people against each other. People value things more than other people. I think when he says "Surround yourself with all you own - Work your fingers to the bone - And happiness evades you still" he is talking about the people who measure their self worth in terms of their net worth, and yet no matter how much they have, they don't feel happy.

Also I think he is saying that, ultimately, we are responsible and that we cannot make excuses. This is evident when he says "It's too easy to malign - The implements that steal our time - But it's we who are to blame" I think he is saying that we should point our fingers at corporations because they just give us what we want. Also he says "You've only got yourself to blame" and "Too eager to appease" which gives me the sense that there are people who want to appease so they can be blind to the problems, like I was talking about the religious part earlier, but that we need to be hard on ourselves for our own benefit. "You must lose so you may gain"
