This has to be one of my favorite songs on the album, I love it. Especially the chorus when he says "please don't--" that open voice makes my heart stop.
I think it pretty much is about a guy who's mom passed away, or left the family when he was a child. And ever since then his family is falling apart.
Like in:
"Mother, where are you today?" (She died, or left)
"Brother, put your needles down" (Family is falling apart)
"The boys you left are men you didn't raise" (She left them as children)
