This song seems very sarcastic and cynical, there is some real frustration and anger in these lyrics. When you hear "welcome to the joke of un-life" you can really tell how cynical this song is, even the "nanana" is sung in a sarcastic angry way. I think this song has captured the anger and despair of being unable to erase this event from history or being unable to change anything about what happened in the past. This must've happened to someone that was dear to one of the band members, you don't just write lyrics like these, it seems very personal. A great song with a depressing message.
I think it is more literal than metaphorical.
He plainly says his mother was raped when she was nine years old and she lost her faith in humanity/God and really lost a part of who she was that day (hey ma, I know, you died so long ago, Hey ma, now I see, you're still a nine year old girl screaming). She died inside and was never really able to move on and grow as a person.

It is a very dark song about the more negative aspects of life.
