i think the song is about having a positive perspective on what may seem like a bad situation.
he loved his girlfriend, he knocked her up...put them in a shitty situation because they werent ready for marriage nevermind a baby.
obviously it didnt work out becuase he didnt try to make it work or appreciate his wife so she ends up leaving him and he makes it so it seem like she is the bitter person.
he only takes his kid out when the bar is closed, he doesnt appreciate his child but when the child questions his existance it sheds light to him eventuallt that the child shouldnt be a burden but is a gift and so was the childs mother. you basically never realize what you have and its significance until its gone.
