If im judging this by the first verse, this might seem really wrong. but to me it sounds like a song about a prostitute. Maybe this guy was using a prostitute or maybe the prostitute was a member of the family, like a sister or something. "The places we cant go" because people know her there as a prostitute.
or maybe the brother is using a prostitute - "Mary," and his brother is trying to protect him because hes got himself into a hole, but he cant do much to help him because he lives so far away. Maybe the guy in the song is a younger brother he feels responsible for but now cant do much to help him. He tries to use money to help him, reflecting the money his brother has wasted on "Mary". I think the brother needs help and sees mary as a super hero to help him out of the hole, but Mary is dressed in "leather and laces" rather than "masks and lycra" that real heroes wear. he seems deluded and reall needs help which his brother is trying to give
this may be really wrong and completely nothing to do with a grandmother, i reckon this song could go in many directions
