i kind of agree with zyxi, but i don't think the suburbs are the inner city suburbs. eastern suburbs like kew, camberwell, toorak and hawthorn are wealthy, and are home to melbourne's influential. western suburbs, however, are portrayed as working class. UnitedWeFall is also correct, kids will play with any other kid, regardless of social status. however as they age, social status becomes evident to them, so they will discriminate based on that.
the last verse really shows what i'm trying to explain:
"There’s a man who was born in the West workin’ at a factory
There’s a man from the East who know runs the whole company
How they’ve grown on their own not like the kids they used to be
Saturdays of sun and war are just fond memories"
east = big CEO's
west = labourers
might have been friends as kids, but now they're in opposite social classes
that's my two cents worth anyway :)
