I'd heard this song as a kid and always wanted to know who it was by, but never managed to find out until a few days ago. I was too stupid to google search the lyrics apparently.
Even back in the day, I viewed it as having a friend that was getting famous. The narrator misses their old friend, but they've long since sold out, changed entirely, gotten a total personality makeover, and the narrator is disgusted with this.
I think that, in a way, this song represents the lack of depth in media today.
