william is such a brilliant musician. i was hooked when i heard this song.
this song really could be about the death of a relationship or a person.
"don't worry if laughter is on your lips
because you wouldn't be you if you changed for this
and i won't measure love from the tears that drip on your face"
i think that's one of the most beautiful and unselfish things you could possibly say. i recently lost a friend to a freak car accident, and i imagine it's what she would say to me if she could. it's like, "you need to keep existing. don't worry if you're laughing. don't change because i'm gone. i know you still love me, even if the tears have stopped. it's okay."
it was certainly a confusing stir of emotions when i laughed for the first time after her death. i almost felt guilty.
at the same time, the third verse seems to speak from the perspective of a serious relationship that's ended:
i should hope that it should turn out fine
but i hope that some sadness does cross your mind
and you'll look for me when you have crossed that line
come one day
when a relationship has ended, you want to wish your lover well, while hoping they feel a mutual sadness every once and awhile because they've lost you. and, sometimes, you hope they'll think of you when they're finally ready to settle down/commit one day.
