Just to clear things up about the origin of the song...

I was at the show in baton rouge when they played this song live for the first time. it was in october/november of 2005 (it was a awhile ago, i can't remember the exact month).

I have the original version of the song and the original lyrics. Although, there is not as blunt of a reference as "starts with a k ends with an a was a beautiful beautiful storm," there are other references to katrina. Drew also said at the show that it was written about hurricane katrina.

I believe this song is a reference to the blunders, FEMA foul-ups, and the general cavalier attitude of some government officials towards to storm, in particular President George W. Bush and Former Governor Katherine Blanco

It seems to written from the perspective of one flying over the inundated New Orleans ("And this is a flood This is what drowning looks like from above"). The mood set by the lyrics that follow suggest that the person seeing the destruction is not really concerned with any of it ("With letters of love being thrown without a care"), is in a position of power in which the necessary help could be provided but isn't ("And I am a god, I'm a machine And I am playing all of you"), and feels that since the situation doesn't personally effect the him/her, it's not such a big deal ("Blown WAY out of proportion").

Also, the "Blown WAY out of proportion" could also be the reference the the media sensationalism that was followed the aftermath of the storm.

I hope that answers some questions that people have been asking. this is a great song and Meriwether is an even greater band. It's only a matter of time before they hit it big. It would do the music industry some good to have a little Louisiana flavor...
