I know this song was written while Jason was still in the band, but you can't help but see the correlation to his departure. Especially since this was his last song with the band, you can't help but wonder if it's about him. Now, we know that Jason didn't write it. Lars and James traditionally wrote everything, and notoriously didn't let Jason have input on anything. But the line "Just as soon as I belong, then it's time I disappear" has always sounded to me like it's about Jason. We all know that he was hazed during his entire tenure with the band. The others took out their frustrations about Cliff's death on him for years. But now that Jason finally had become part of the Metallica family, he wanted out. So he left. I'm not saying James wrote this about Jason to push him away. But maybe it was one of those subconscious things. When it was written I don't think it was supposed to be about Jason, but looking back on it, it's hard not to see it.

i know this is ancient but no one here has gotten it right. the song is about kids who have been institutionalized by the state. i grew up in dcfs (dept. of child and family services, ill.) and you can hear the phrases i heard a million times growing up all through out this song. especially in the begining when you hear the custodian saying "yeah, well you're in here and that's that". and it is that way until one day with no warning you come back from school and you case worker is there with all your stuff in...
