mann this sure is a hippy song :]
yehh it does have a deeper meaning but to me it's also about telling you to enjoy your youth while you can,or just try to capture the carefree attitude associated with the youth, embrace it,do positive things with it,dont be afraid to stand up to authority(lock the parents out lol,i like it ;] )
I'm fairly sure they mean "lock the parents out" it in a figurative sense. And, as I believe is true for most of their lyrics, it was written to be interpreted in multiple ways. I mean there's no denying their songs are abstract poems with many metaphors and idioms that can also be taken literally. I don't mean to implying that I don't see a centralized theme, because I do. I believe it's baldly stated. But different lines in the song allude to other themes hidden within and that's what makes their music so fascinating. Each song is like A...

Each song is like A cryptic puzzle with many thought provoking philosophic messages hidden within. Each time you listen, like with a complex movie or abstract painting, you gain a new or changed understanding.
But, I digress. You must explain your comments riobard I feel I may be misunderstanding. It seems to be a contradiction. But I agree your tenet touches upon the message in the line. Renounce your family's beliefs. Question all. Your family being your main source of morals, ethics, and character. A huge influence on your outlook on life. Lock them out. Don't let them rule or ruin you're fun, mind , peace, passion or compassion. "Lock out" I don't necessarily think means block out, but block out the control they try to have over your philosophies on life. Still taking their ideas in to consideration. But seeing them as considerations not absolutes.
Also, I believe this band really puts an importance on enjoying life and having fun no matter what surroundings you face day to day. As well as influencing their listeners to reach out and pass on said message. To try and make a change. So I could see them also meaning sometime adolescent's need to remove adult's from their surroundings and have a little uninhibited fun, romantic or otherwise.

if you lock all the parents out, how will you learn anything at all?

also, you might want to keep this tenet in mind: "Renounce your father, renounce your mother, all your family."
