Ready for my opinion? So as many of you have said...Lydia (the girl in the song) is a girl "John" is/was whatever totally in to, yet he felt she wasn't right for him. "She leaves her toothbrush at my place, as if I have the extra space." Basically he is just going with it because he's enjoying it even though he knows it won't last. She's showing him a good time and he figures what the hell. As far as the sirens go and falling asleep to sirens, I think that many, well all of you are confused on the meaning of this. Yes it's a song about the city and of course at night time the only thing you really hear in a city is sirens, however, John is so clever, I think he mean't it in a different way. "and call each other up when we get home
falling asleep
to the sound of sirens". I think he is referring to Greek mythology. According to Greek mythology, the sirens were three women who live in the ocean and sang beautiful songs that caused men to sail their ships towards the beautiful sound, however the sirens song caused these ships to sail towards rocks and cause wrecks where the sailors would then die. I think John uses this idea to describe that he's falling asleep to the sound of the sirens (in this case the girls voice) because as I said before, he knows this relationship isn't right, yet he's having a good time so he goes with it. John is one of the most clever song writers, and I really believe this is what he mean't by it. But then again, its just my opinion and maybe it really is as simple as police sirens in the city night.
