This song was written by axl in 1992/3 after he broke up with Stephanie seymour and hence is about her. Its extremely emotional and in it he talks about not being able to let ther love die because he believes she still loves him and holds a special light for him, even though she may try deny it. She wa the love of axl's life and TWAT is aso about her, friends say he never ever got over her. In 2000 axl stated himself that a few songs on the album were about stephanie and he still has the love for her . he'll 'never say goodbye.'

it's also believed that chinese democracy is a way for axl to communicate with dylan, stephanies son (don't cry video) who axl loved and was a father figure to. When axl and stephanie split, believing she was cheating, stephanie never let axl see dylan again and axl's pain over this is shown in the video for estranged, which was written before axl split with stephanie but the video was made after they had just broke up and at the start axl is on the cupboard sleeping and dreaming about himself with dylan with real footage, poor man.
