I think the main element to this song is that even though a lot of the conveniences/social standards we have today didn't exist back in the day, children from that generation still grew up, and went on to lead happy lives. In ways, the simplicity of life back then was beneficial. The world has changed a whole lot, for the good in some ways, but in other ways I think that life back a couple of decades ago taught people about character, something that seems to be lost in today's society.
