the first thing everyone's mind seems to jump to when a song is cryptic is that it must be about drugs. i really don't think that' the case with this song.

i'm reading Chronicles by Bob Dylan and i just got to a part where he's talking about his uncles who fought in WWII and they all brought back various things-- one being a Japanese cigarette case. He also says that all his uncles carried on with civilian life like nothing ever happened.

I had a eureka moment, because i realized this clicks PERFECTLY with this song.

The case is a memento from war, and he wants to block out all his memories of battle. When you look in the mirror you think about who you are, and particularly disturbing experiences in war would have to be so tied in with the soldier's identity from that point on. I just picture the veteran staring himself down and trying to make that part of him disappear.

It's definitely not a stretch to imagine that Brit Daniels has read Chronicles either, so that further backs up my idea. Any thoughts anyone?
