I think this song is about God and the human being. It talks about wounded soldier (war(of good vs evil)), and that God won't leave us behind no matter what gets in his way, but God talks in past tense, like he's reminding someone who is already lost that He was there for him and that He would have come for him, but only if he had told him to.
Anyways this is what this song makes me think of and I think it's a good way of interpreting it cause it gives us hope of what will come after we die.
