It's about being a drug addict and keeping a "low" lifestyle. A lifestyle associated with ppl of a lower class. Someone, probably a woman, wants him to straighten out and be upper class. He admits his true self is looked down on (hated identity). He's tried(he bought the cadi), but in this song he realizes that he has to be himself, a low class drug addict. His galaxie is the real-life symbol that lets him put into words how he feels. There is a lot of truth to it, but also a lot of denial. It sad is some ways.
Not sure how your identity has anything to do with social sature or drugs for that matter. Or, how this has anything to do with a woman. Obviously, he shouldn't have been so discreet in this song, or others since every song seems to be "a reflection" of his drug addiction. Just not true. Perhaps I am biased and a bit protective because I can personally relate to many, many of his works and I am not a drug addict nor ever have been. His drug problem should not define him nor be his legacy!
