Themes: Labor, (Putting a lot of work and faith into something and being disappointed)
Another hymal. I dont know many slave songs, but these are definitely wage slavery songs.
Dude figures theres another world where he will be saved.
Poor Man: Someone who believes in God and works ass off for a living at the same time.
Ya'll should ask yourselves: Is there anything for a Poor Man here in America?
I think what Old Crow feels sorry for people clinging to religion. it's a last hope,
Let me just say this: I think Old Crow is at its best with this hymnal-country material. It is about a desperate hope. A desperate hope that life will improve if not in this life the next one due to humility before God. The songs about what is sin and what is really just human nature make me think.
To me, a capitalist industrial engineering hopeful, I feel like the poor man is an everyman hero. Which is really sad. Many people can identify with the song even if they dont believe in God because the song is about desperate hope in general. The desperate hope that someone loves you when you are not totally sure they are. Or even the desperate hope that loves exists period, not just an evolutionary trait that helps our natural selection. Personally, I feel that you can never really know what someone thinks about you. So get out your desperate hope checklist, a box of wine, and loop this song.
