On the Line Lyrics

I think this is about a couple and their relationship was going great. But something happened (I'm thinking one of them went on tour) that kind of broke them apart. And the other person in the relationship felt alone. So they tried resolving their problems over the phone. But it didn't work and they were going to leave their problems "on the line" (line=phone line). then this part... "I try to call again, I get your mailbox, Like a letter left unread" the person feeling alone is trying to call the one that's not there, but they're not answering. and... "Apologies are often open-ended, But this one's better left unsaid." open-ended means without fixed limits or restrictions. so I think she's saying that she'd usually apologize for something like this, but I'm thinking maybe she thought he was being immature and wont apologize this time.
