Okay, it's the one part I never quite could interpret, but it finally clicked. Well I think here they're talking about their failing relationship. The "unfamiliar song" is their relationship. It's just not working out. The guy would like to "sing along", meaning he'd LIKE to try and go on pretending that everything is okay but he "couldn't change the key" just can't adjust for it to work out with the rest of his life. Then it sounds like the girl is saying that she'd also like to have the relationship work, but she knows it won't work either.
