I believe our friend Dan here was once again writing about his thoughts of an inner battle he fights, between religion (in his mind, a relationship with Christ - speaking to him in the second person here) and musical success. Dan sees a problem with his ego, fueled by the high of performing live, clashing with his religious upbringing and beliefs of keeping humble.
"does it make you feel cold
to know that i would never die for you?"
Dan is basically calling himself a hypocrite here, or at least weak. He's asking Jesus, who he believes died for his sins, if he feels cold/disconnected that Dan wouldn't (or couldn't) do the same in return.
The mood of the song makes me wonder if Dan is losing his drive to write about these things (religion), as it has a sort of cynical heir to it - almost angry. By the lyrics, it seems as if "Hopeless" refers to his own fate, but paired with the music, it seems as if he may be calling the fight to stay religious hopeless.
I wonder which it is. Dan, are you out there, buddy? Shed some light for an old fan?
